That would have been impossible, for in concert he makes Dylan seem predictable. He will suddenly change words and tempo, abandon himself to a groove, call an abrupt halt - and expect the band to read his mind. I have seen Morrison several times over the years, and each time I walk away blinking at the mystery. He looks like a squat, stout, Irish postman and acts like an ill-tempered dictator.
He may not hate the audience; maybe he just likes to show us his back. I was driving somewhere in Orlando, late one evening, when the DJ of the local jazz radio station started to play Live at the Grand Opera House in its entirety. When I arrived at my destination I sat in my car, transfixed, and didn't even turn off the engine until I had listened to the very last note of the concert. I had never heard anything like it!
The next morning I went out and bought the album and it has remained one of my favorite works of art to this day. This CD is a work of art, by a man who is one of the most influential and prolific songwriters of all time. I also happen to think that this CD showcases Van at the zenith of his brilliant career.
The Belfast show can be appreciated on so many different levels. The lyrics themselves are a religious experience. But even if Van Morrison wasn't such an incredible poet/songwriter he would still be producing some of the most entertaining music ever created, simply because he continuously surrounds himself with the most talented musicians and back-up singers available.
This CD is a shining testiment to that. The flow of the concert is remarkable, the musicians are all spot on throughout and the back-up singers all have voices that most front men would kill for. imgTupelo Honey is the fifth solo album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison. It was released in October 1971 by Warner Bros.
Morrison had written all of the songs on the album in Woodstock, New York before his move to Marin County, California, except for 'You're My Woman', which he wrote during the recording sessions. Recording began at the beginning of the second quarter of 1971 at the Wally Heider Studios, San Francisco. Morrison moved to the Columbia Studios in May 1971 to complete the album. The namesake for the album and its title track is a varietal honey produced from the flowers of the tupelo tree found in the Southeastern United States. The album features various musical genres, most prominently country, but also R&B, soul, folk-rock and blue-eyed soul.
The lyrics echo the domestic bliss portrayed on the album cover; they largely describe and celebrate the rural surroundings of Woodstock and Morrison's family life with then-wife Janet 'Planet' Rigsbee. Tupelo Honey received most of its success in America; it charted at number 27 on the Billboard charts and in 1977 it was certified gold. It failed to reach any of the European or other world-wide charts. The album yielded two hit singles, the hymn-like title track, as well as the R&B-flavored 'Wild Night'. This 2008 Japan SHM remastered edition includes 2 bonus tracks- an alternative take of the single, Wild Night, as well as an unreleased version of Down By The River Side.

According to the source text, the recording appeared in circulation only recently. Along with the source recording, the torrent included another version altered by “JTT” in order to fix alteration to the original stereo image. Although there was a slight phase problem with the original recording, I found it difficult to hear any significant difference in the altered version. I also noticed other problems with the recording that could be fairly easily remedied.
I have thus produced this remastered recording in order to address such problems. There were some minor phase problems and channel imbalances that had to be adjusted. I actually added 30% of the right channel to the left channel in most cases. In other cases, the stereo image and balance were disrupted in varying degrees and adjusted accordingly. I also took the liberty of attempting to restore some of the high range frequencies that have been lost through a number of possible circumstances.
There was also an abundance of low mid range frequency levels as well as some harsh mids and high mids and low level highs. I used an accurate and precise graphic equalizer to adjust these specific frequency ranges accordingly. I can’t say that I’m the biggest Van Morrison fan or anything like that but I figured this early performance deserved to be presented as accurately as possible. The story as I understand it was this was one of a batch of 10′ reel to reel tapes that were sold on eBay November, 2010: The tapes included Van Morrison at the Fillmore West, October 10 (?) 1970 along with a recording of the Bob Dylan bootleg album “The Villager” and Van Morrison at the Fillmore West, April 26th, 1970 along with four studio recordings from Van Morrison at the Maverick.
These studio recordings were from the “Band And Street Choir” album. It is believed this tape was originally in the collection of Andy Robinson, a Street Choir background vocalist and Woodstock radio DJ and recording studio owner. After an illness several years ago, he was unable to pay the rent on his storage unit, and the contents were auctioned off. In 2010 items from the collection were auctioned on ebay. The recording was purchased and made available by a German collector with the help of other serious collectors who undertook a lot of time and effort in transferring the tape at considerable cost. The tape crossed twice the atlantic to end up in a professional studio to be transferred.
After circulating privately, It was made freely available last year.
