Currently I have a modem and wireless router set up under the desk in the office. My home has structured cable installed throughout. Up to now I have not needed to use it. The boy wants to play his XBOX on line with friends upstairs.

When I came to at the local Game Stop after being told a wireless XBOX 360 wireless transmitter was $100 I decided to try to move the modem to the GE Smart Connection Center to make the entire house wired for Internet via Ethernet cable. Can I just basically plug the main feed line from Comcast into the is slot of the Comcast modem/router and plug the out line into the in slot of the GE smart center where the main feed is installed now? I have to plan ahead with playing with this so as not interfere with the Wife's work. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Is the GE Smart thingie the equipment that connects the whole house? If it is then it sounds like your idea is right.

Does the 360 have a HD? He's going to need one to play online. Or a USB thumb drive (much cheaper). That's all you need now. Just for game saves and saving his GT. You won't be downloading games to it though. If that doesn't work.

Come talk to me. I have the older model, that I've only used a few times, of the wireless antennae. Literally used it a few days. I'd sell it to you for cheap.

It's not the newest version that has two antennas on it that they came out with. I paid $100 for it. It works great, but for me in my house the bonus room and router are on opposite corners of the house and different floors.

My connection speed wasn't that good so I hard wired it. You can test your approximate connection by using a wireless laptop up where the 360 will be. That should give you an idea of how the 360 with receive and transmit. I like the idea of wiring your home the other way. Why didn't you do that from day 1? Those things are awesome. Going to give it a go in a little bit.

Cross all of your fingers fellas. HF, I have the same situation in regards to location of XBOX and wireless router locations. His Wii has issues with the connection at times as well. And Willsdad, if by HD you mean High Def TV, Yes, it is a High Def TV set. 55' to be exact, the spoiled little brat. He means Hard Drive you Muppet.

All I know is that my son could connect his Wii wireless, with intermittent connection issues, and play on line with his friends. With the XBOX I have decided to try to hard wire it for better results and I have to add doohickeys out the ying yang? My son has the XBOX 360 Elite edition. All I know is that it is black.

Here are some pics Don. I did try to install the modem/router as I described with no luck. As you may see I have Comcast phone also and that is the black box on the lower right hand side.

Wires from the phone line and CAT5 line have been spliced numerous times to get it all to work which it has flawlessly since day 1. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Does that modem control the internet connection as well or is that a separate modem? It's hard to see from the pic, but is it clear what cables are for your phone jacks? Do you know if you have a home run configuration? (home run = each phone/cable/ethernet has one wire that runs directly to the box and not spliced anywhere in between) Do any of your ethernet ports work in the house? That modem looks like it has an open slot for an ethernet cable below the two ports that look to have spliced wires running into it.

Is that your WAN port? That is where the ethernet patch cable would run into the GE box. Irie, it is a rats nest for sure.

Not my doing mind you. I am thinking of calling Comcast but with the possibility of moving next year I do not want to dump a lot of $$ into it. Don, I have a separate modem for Internet now. The WAN input or 'in' as it says on the box is the top left cat5 input that has the spliced phone/cat5 cable running to it now. If I pull that out I guess I lose my phone. There is indeed a Ethernet input on the back of the modem in the box.

That is what I used to try to get it up and running before. I am thinking of calling Comcast to see if they will look at it for little or no charge. I pay enough to them each month for God's sake.

It probably should have been hooked up the way I now wanted from the get go. Back to my limited experience, when we hooked up acustomer on the int or phone, we had to call dispatch and have them activate the box. A customer wanted me to ethernet his whole house up. We didn't do that.

We did like with tv, we brought in the cable for one. What you do on the inside of the house is yo bussiness, unless ya wanted x amount of hook ups at the per hook up price.

There was always a cable guy off on a Sunday that would do the job on the side as private contractor. Cheers!:chugchug: Jeff. Sorry for the late post, I know most of you have been sitting on the edge of your seats waiting for my update on the XBOX issue. Well, it was worth the wait fellas. Here is my report to the front.

Comcast scheduled to be here between 2-5 PM. Comcast shows up at 2:05 PM, very good sign! I explain the situation to the tech and he says his invoice says a whole different story, not a good sign and it got worse when he looked the rats nest of a junction box I posted photos of and he said we do not do that type of work. He did clean up some other signal problems he found in the house and said after about 15 minutes 'I do have another possible solution to your problem'. He described to me the use of a 'House Plug' that basically uses your home electrical wiring as a conduit for the Ethernet line. I ask him how much and he said 'nothing, I have a couple on my truck we give out to good customers.' He showed me how to hook it up and all you do is plug one into a wall outlet then plug an Ethernet cable into the back of it and then the other end into the router.

Then anywhere else in the house you plug the other unit into an AC outlet and plug the Ethernet cable from the box into the unit you desire. Jr is setting up his XBOX LIVE account right now which is harder than the job I just described. I should add I did hit one snag while trying to connect the XBOX on line. For whatever reason the AC outlet I wanted to use near the TV that he plays games on would not work. It had a weak signal or something.

I have to run a cord from across the room for it to work for now. I have no idea why. The $20 tip I gave the tech was much better than a $100 price of a wireless antenna that would have sucked in the end. It was even better than the shitty deal Hockeyfan would have offered me on his used wireless antenna. Here is the link to the boxes I got gratis, well kind of. Sorry, the site will not let me post a link at this time SMC 85 turbo boost is the name of the product. VERY cool indeed.

Those powerline ethernet boxes do the job but won't get you the speeds a cat5 cable will. I wonder if you ran all your ethernet cables into a new hub and one connection directly to the router if that might solve your issue. That GE contraption could be the issue. I read an interesting article in the local paper last weekend about wireless routers and hard wired internet connection speeds. He found that when he had both wireless and wired connections running simultaneously, the connection speed of the wired connections slowed down almost 1/3. Don, all I know is I am wireless right now, the wife is working hard wired and the boys are gaming upstairs and loving it. I think I figured out the issue with the certain AC outlets not working the house boxes.

The tech told me to avoid plugging the box into outlet strips and circuits with dimmable lamps on them. Turns out the ceiling fan has a dimmable light hooked up in it. That has to be the cause of the problem. I also would like to point out a pretty cool, and free, tool I downloaded called network Magic. I have a linksys wireless router made by cisco. By downloading Network Magic I can control all of the settings on all computer connections from my main PC. Probably not a big deal to you techies but to a hacker like me it was a huge help.

While setting up the XBOX I was instructed to change my MTU setting on the router to 1364. What the hell is that?

Sure as shit I found it by clicking on the network magic desk top tool box and made the change in a second. It even found an issue that head to be corrected after I made that change with my PC connection. It asked me if I wanted it to fix it. I click yes and BANG, all is right in my home network world.
